Auto Insurance Rates
insurance

Automobile insurance premiums for teenagers are ridiculously high, primarily due to the fact that they are inexperienced drivers and are at increased risk of having and/or causing automobile accidents.  Once they reach the age of 25, their insurance rates will generally decrease provided they have proven that they are capable, safe drivers.  Although most agencies charge extra high premiums for teens, there are a few companies that offer lower priced policies as long as certain conditions are met.
Insurance companies charge higher premiums for teens because they get into more accidents than older drivers (over the age of 30).  If they get any traffic tickets or become in involved in any car accidents after they are insured, their rates will go up dramatically.  In order to keep rates as low as possible, teens should always adhere strictly to traffic laws and policy requirements.

Instead of getting teens their own individual auto insurance policies, parents should instead add them to their own policies as additional drivers.  They should arrange for their teens to take driver’s education and defensive driving courses.  This can lower rates and also ensure that teens are adequately prepared to drive safely.  Teens should be encouraged to always practice safe driving habits and to avoid using alcohol.

Most automobile insurance agencies base their rates on several different factors.  The age and gender of an individual will be carefully considered, as well as their driving history.  Agencies will also consider how long the candidate has had a driver’s license, the area the driver resides & drives in, and the type of automobile they drive.

No matter what the automobile make and model, it should have certain safety devices installed to ensure the lowest premiums.  Features such as anti-lock brakes, anti-theft safety devices, and both driver’s & passenger air bags should always be installed in the automobile to lower premiums.

You will get lower rates for your teen drivers if you put them in older, heavier vehicles.  Auto insurance companies know that these types of vehicles are less likely to be driven recklessly, which greatly lowers the risk of them being in an accident.  Also, the higher value a car has, the higher the insurance rates will be for teen drivers.  Parents will also be offered lower rates for their teen drivers if the teens make good grades in school and take driver’s education courses.  Parents should ask insurance companies to list teens on their policies as occasional insured drivers for the lowest price.

As you can see, there are ways to get automobile insurance for your teenaged drivers without paying a ridiculously high price.  Just make sure your teen keeps his or her grades up in school, practices good driving habits, and drives an older car that is not so high in price or value.  As long as your teen can avoid traffic tickets and accidents, you can rest assured that the insurance rates will go down in a few years.
